A STILL IN THE STORM - TESTIMONY

In 1994, my wife and I lived in St. Thomas, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. We briefly enjoyed its beauty, while doing mission work there. Then September of that year a major hurricane struck. It changed our lives in many ways.

We first heard the announcement on radio and television that a major hurricane "Marilyn" was heading for St.Thomas. It was forecasted that the eye of hurricane would pass over the island which thrived on tourism. We sort of knew what that meant, because of our geography in High School; we knew that if the eye passes over us, we would get the full force of the hurricane. However we never had experienced a hurricane before and feelings of both excitement and fear gripped us as we prepared and braced for its impact.

That night in September 22 of 1994, when hurricane Marilyn hit St.Thomas at 125 -140 miles per hour winds, my wife and I were huddled together in the bathroom with a mattress over us, praying to God. I heard the winds outside making music with angry howls, like I have never heard before. Many times the house, which was concrete built on stilts, shook from the force of the winds. Of and on, we would peep outside and unbelievably saw debris and instruments blown around like missiles and airborne trees. Yes! I said airborne trees rooted out from the ground.
After about 2 1/2 hours of this torment, came a period of dead calm. We knew the eye had passed over us. I had never experienced this phenomenon before and for the first; one of my Geography classes came to life. But other things were going through my mind during this period. How in the midst of the storms of life, God can provide a calm; and like the eye of this hurricane, his presence can be found.

Then came the winds howling at 125 miles per hour and above, in the opposite direction. My wife and I returned to our bathroom shelter with the mattress over us huddled together, again praying to God to keep us safe. Drifting between sleep and wake several times during the night, we can hear the merciless winds on the outside wrecking havoc and destruction. The radio that aired people screaming for help finally went dead. We knew what that meant, for even they had to take cover.

Finally came the long awaited morning and we opened our windows with a trepidation in our hearts, not too anxious to see the results of natures angry work. What met our eyes cannot be fully described in words here. It looked like a nuclear bomb was dropped in our surroundings. I saw huge metal beams of commercial buildings twisted like macaroni, boats in the roads and buildings as though someone had manually lifted them out of the seas and rested them on land, houses completely destroyed to the ground. Here comes the amazing part. Every house around us was either completely or partially destroyed except, God is my witness as I say this, the house we stayed in. Not one glass, window, or piece of wood was broken in the house where my wife and I were living. That’s right! Our house was completely untouched, nothing broken, I mean nothing, while all the houses around us were either flattened to the ground or partially destroyed.

What else can I conclude, but that Almighty God had protected us that night? His presence was there in the storm. This experience provided insight for me to write this song "A STILL IN THE STORM". May you likewise experience God's stillness and presence in your every storm.

Why do I feel His presence in the storm?

There's a still in the storm
There's a still in the storm

There's a still in the storm
I can hear His voice

It's amazing!
While the winds are blowing
Blessings raining
His whirlwind keeps me turning

I go round and round
I fly above the ground
I fly above the ground

I feel His presence, right beside me
