ABOUT SOCA MUSIC

The rythmic beat of Soca music born in the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago, is a fusion of Calypso and Soul music. Typically Soca music contains steel drums, heavy steel percussion, bongo drums, horns, some guitar (especially bass) and keyboard sounds. It is primarily a dance music! The lyrics that accompany soca music are usually in the form of chants, syncopation, sung in broken english and caribbean dialect.

The acknowledged father of Soca music is the calypsonian, Lord Shorty (Garfield Blackman). He initially referred to his musical invention as "Solka" meaning the "soul of calypso". By the 1980's it became known as "Soca". There are some variations of soca music where the Hindustanic influences of the East Indian population of Trinidad have produced a variation called Chutney music. Some popular Soca songs that became international hits include: "Turn Me On" by Kevin Lyttle, "Hot, Hot, Hot" and "Who Let The Dogs Out" by Baha Men. Sean Paul also does some variations to Soca music blending it with Dancehall Reggae and Hip Hop.

Although Soca music is usually associated with sensuality and masqerading in the streets in the yearly Carnival, some artists have used this style of music as a social commentary and for positive messages. It is my pleasure to use this genre of music for a spiritual message all in ACAPPELLA!
